Hi, my name is Lauren, and I am an illustrator.
I use shapes to create uncluttered, sophisticated, powerful compositions. I convey a concept in as few forms as possible. I like to repeat Constantin Brancusi’s mantra, “Simplicity is complexity resolved.”
In school, at the Savannah College of Art & Design, I studied illustration and fashion. And it was there that I realized my favorite illustration tool came from my sewing box— my embroidery scissors.
A SCAD professor noticed my love of collage, and introduced me to the works of Kvĕta Pacovská. Her work and her words changed my life. Her simple, profound forms and compositions, embellished with vivid contrasts, spoke to me in a way no other illustrations had.
In Ms. Pacovská’s words:
“…maximum contrast is the maximum beauty. I am striving for maximum contrast. Red and green. The placing of colours one over the other. It depends on the relation, proportion, rhythm, size, amount and how we placed colours together. It is like music. Each individual tone is beautiful by itself and in certain groupings we create new dimensions, harmony, disharmony, symphonies, operas…”
I am also inspired by the artists and designers Paul Rand, Bruno Munari, and Ikko Tanaka, the shapes and proportions of 1980’s Comme des Garçon and Issey Miyake, and the sense of humor in Ettore Sottsass’ interiors. I am drawn to the moodiness of color. In my work, I use carefully selected pallets that I find by creating color experiments and collages. Now that Ive switched my embroidery scissors for digital tools, my love of color has only grown deeper with endless hues and possibilities, but my fondness for blunt forms remain.
Movies are also central to the way I see, and pieces of films often find their way into my work, whether it’s the symbolism in works by Fellini and Bergman or the sets and exaggerated, comic gestures of Jacques Tati.
Nothing is more exciting to me than receiving a new brief. Let’s work together to create something beautiful!
